Salvatore writes me from
Malta inviting me to go to visit his website,where he has published the
photos of his Nativity Crib. I have visited it and I have decided to
devote this page to it, inserting some photos that I found there,because,
certainly, his work deserves a positive evaluation, both for the good use
of cork as the raw material, that makes this work extremely natural and
warm, giving it indeed a realistic aspect to the diorama, both for
intelligent use of common small plastic statues, even if well-made,
however, Salvatore personalizes, making opportune changes, to suit these
characters and the scene created by him, as if they had been designed for
that context. Other interesting element is the search and the scene
adjustment to the historical epoch and the Middle Eastern scenery, both
with the structure of the landscape, the houses, the vegetation, and with
the clothes of the figures. It’s also appreciable the search of very
natural postures of the characters that, usually, tend to result static
and poorly contextual to the environment. For example, it should be noted
the natural attitude of the shepherd in the photo 4, he seems to lean out
as to look over the wall. In short, there is an accurate search of
materials and details with which Salvatore Debono creates indeed a
scenography deserving of attention. I have quoted above, in the page, some
lines of his web site, with which he introduces his job and the purpose
that he intends to reach. I have left the original version in English,
translating it for my Italian visitors, hoping the Salvatore’s friends,
that will visit this page from the nearby Malta, will appreciate it.

Io l'ho visitato ed ho deciso di dedicargli questa pagina,
inserendo qualcuna delle foto che vi ho trovato,
perché il suo lavoro merita una valutazione senz'altro positiva, sia per
il felice uso del sughero come materia prima della sua opera
che la rende estremamente naturale e calda, dando
al diorama un aspetto davvero realistico, sia per
l'intelligente utilizzo di statuine comuni in
plastica, anche se di buona fattura, che, però,
Salvatore, apportando opportune modifiche,
personalizza ed adatta alle scene da lui create, come se fossero
state pensate proprio per quel contesto.
Altro elemento interessante è la ricerca e l'adeguamento della scena
all'epoca storica e all'ambientazione mediorientale sia per quanto
concerne la struttura del paesaggio, le case, la vegetazione, che per
l'abbigliamento dei personaggi. Apprezzabile è anche la ricerca di posture
molto naturali delle figurine che, invece, solitamente tendono a risultare
statiche e scarsamente contestuali all'ambiente. Tanto per fare un
esempio, si noti la naturalezza della posa del pastore raffigurato nella
foto 4 che, appoggiato alla costruzione, sembra sporgersi come per
guardare oltre il muro. Insomma una ricerca accurata di materiali e
particolari con cui Salvatore Debono crea davvero una scenografia
meritevole di attenzione. Ho riportato qui sopra, nella pagina,
alcune righe trovate sul suo spazio web, con le quali presenta il suo
lavoro e lo scopo che intende raggiungere. Ho lasciato la versione
